How to prevent DNS registration of IPv6 addresses?

In order to stop DNS registration of IPv6 addresses on Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista or Windows 7 systems, it is not sufficient just to disable “Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6)” protocol on the properties of network interface, as shown on the following screenshot:

In addition, certain Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) components must be disabled as explained in the following knowledge base article: How to disable certain Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) components in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852.

There are several values for the DisabledComponents registry value explained in this article. In my case, option to disable all IPv6 interfaces except for the IPv6 loopback interface (value 0x11) works as expected.

  1. Thanks for this very helpful post. Exactly what I was looking for and worked a treat for me.
It’s a pity they make us go through this isn’t it. Means we actually have to disable IPv6 almost entirely to achieve something which should be simple. I’d much rather have the ability for a server to communicate on IPv6 but not make it register DNS entries for IPv6, but they won’t let us! I wonder if there’s a clever way of doing it with netsh…

    • Thank you for your comment.
I am not sure… it is possible that this can also be achieved by using netsh.
If you find an alternative way to accomplish it, please let me know…

      Thanks!

  2. netsh interface 6to4 set state disabled
will do the same if your IPv4 address is a public one

  3. Or via GPO:
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Network\TCPIP Settings\IPv6 Transition Technologies : „6to4 State“ set to Disable
